Our Treatment Steps at the Prostrate Center

Our approach looks like this:

  • Step 1: Diagnosis – Our precision diagnostic options are highly effective and have a high accuracy and detection rate. Not only are we successful in detecting the presence of cancer, our state of the art diagnostics are able to characterize the type of tumor, allowing for a highly accurate treatment recommendation.
  • Step 2: Therapy – We use treatment options that are precise and targeted. Our therapy methods are state of the art, combining a gentle approach with effective results and minimal side effects. Irreversible electroporation (IRE – NanoKnife®) stand to wholly replace the traditional methods of surgery and radiation used by other facilities. For patients who are not good candidates for NanoKnife® treatment, we can implement other therapies designed to suit their unique situations at any of our network centers, including our San Diego office.

Using the Most Effective Procedures for Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

The first sign that prostate cancer may be present is typically an elevation in PSA levels, which calls for additional testing. In most cases, a procedure known as a transrectal punch biopsy will be recommended. However, this test only has a detection sensitivity of approximately 30 to 35%.

At The Prostrate Center in San Diego, CA, we believe in doing better for our patients. Our goal is to give you the support and answers you need and deserve. That’s why we use the most advanced and effective options available so that our patients have answers quickly and accurately. The procedures we use have a detection sensitivity of 85 to 100%.

These options include:

  • Multimodal MRIs
  • MRI-guided 3-D mapping biopsies / transperineal 3-D mapping biopsies
  • 3-D mapping biopsy and histomechanical modeling

The Prostate Center emphasizes excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. Most facilities utilize testing that is less than dependable and may result in false positives or missed diagnosis. A false positive can lead to unnecessary fear and anxiety on the part of the patient—not to mention invasive procedures that are not actually needed.

With our services at The Prostate Center, you can have confidence that you will receive the following:

  1. Dependable detection of cancer – Most diagnostic facilities utilize a procedure called the rectal punch biopsy, which has a detection rate of 30 to 35%. At The Prostate Center, our advanced diagnostics enable us to maintain detection rates of between 85 and 100%.
  2. Dependable assessment of cancer – We are able to knowledgeably and accurately assess the danger of the cancer, if present, using 3-D biopsies.
  3. Avoidance of unnecessary procedures – Due to the highly effective results our diagnostics procure, we are able to help our patients avoid unnecessary biopsies should a prostate MRI come back negative.
  4. Avoidance of dangerous infections – Our operating room meets the highest clinical standards. We do everything necessary to protect our patients, ease their discomfort, and eliminate risk.
  5. Ability to provide accurate recommendations – Due to the exceptionally advanced nature of our diagnostic methods, we are able to provide highly specific and accurate recommendations for therapy and treatment.

Therapy - Breakthrough Prostate Cancer

Treatment & Therapy

Pioneers in Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) / NanoKnife®

Our founder, Dr. Michael K. Stehling, is a pioneer in utilizing NanoKnife® technology in the treatment of prostate cancer. This highly effective and minimally invasive procedure avoids the common side effects plaguing traditional prostate cancer treatment methods—specifically, issues affecting erectile function and continence. Of the over 600 patients treated at the center, 0% have experienced incontinence and just 13.3% suffer from transient impotence. On the other hand, 100% of our patients have experienced successful treatments in terms of complete tumor ablation, while recurrence rates have remained consistently low.

Our History: Serving Hundreds

of Patients Since 2010

In 2010, Dr. Michael K. Stehling was encouraged by his close friend and Boston University colleague, Dr. Ducksoo Kim, to found The Prostate Center. Dr. Stehling and Dr. Kim completed joint work in the 1990s at Harvard Medical School. Their experience in imaging technology and minimally invasive surgical techniques led them to see the need for change in the area of prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. Whereas traditional methods are inexact and often involve major and destructive side effects, the modern therapies utilized at The Prostate Center are much more gentle and precise.

The efforts of an elite team of physicians, engineers, and scientists at the Institute for Imaging Diagnostics led to major advancements in prostate cancer diagnosis using MRI methods between the years 2001 and 2010. At that point—driven by the efforts of Dr. Gary Onik and the arrival of irreversible electroporation (IRE) treatment—3-D biopsies were progressively developed, and the team of anesthesiologists, urologists, and internists grown accordingly.

The Prostate Center continues to stand at the forefront of developments in the field of prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. Our team takes an interdisciplinary and international approach to evaluating research, technological developments, and clinical applications. This allows us to provide our patients with access to the best and most advanced diagnostic services and treatments, minimizing side effects and providing that the original goal of our founders is possible: Prostate cancer does not have to mean a diminished quality of life.
